SHOW HISTORY

The Hockey Sweater is a heartfelt addition to the growing canon of Canadian musical theatre. It is a timeless Quebec story that has charmed generations of children and adults and has been reinvented for the stage in a spectacular new family musical.
The musical premiered in 2017 at the Segal Centre in Montreal as part of the celebrations of Montreal’s 375th and Canada’s 150th anniversaries. It features a cast of 17, including a company of eight actors between the ages of 9 and 15 years old who act, sing, dance and skate their way through the production.
For the city of Montreal’s 375th anniversary, The Segal Centre commissioned and produced the world premiere of the musical adaptation of Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater. The show played to sold out audiences in Montreal and got the attention of the National Creation Fund.
The NCF’s investment enabled the Segal Centre to continue developing the script and score and incorporate changes to the original production. The Hockey Sweater then played to sold out audiences at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre in December of 2018. It was at this production that Rainbow Stage’s Artistic Director, Carson Nattrass, saw the show in person, and began the journey to producing it in Winnipeg.
