How can I support Rainbow Stage?

There are many ways to support Rainbow Stage. Attending shows, attending fundraising events, volunteering, donating and joining Facebook are some of the ways that you can become involved as part of the Rainbow Family.

What does “not for profit” mean?

What it means is that the entity, as separate from all the people running it, does not hold on to earnings. They can accumulate assets for large program expenditures, but the organization as an entity doesn’t pay out profits. Most people who work for not-for-profits earn normal or even smaller salaries compared to private profit industry. It’s a job like any other, only the company they work for happens to not pay income tax (even though every employee does).

Can I bring children? Do I need to buy a ticket for my baby?

Rainbow Stage follows the standard theatre policy of no babes in arms, which means everyone attending will require a ticket regardless of age. We don’t recommend patrons bring children under age three. We ask patrons who are considering bringing younger children to any performance, ask themselves these questions:

  1. Is the child able to sit through a full length movie without getting up to move around?
  2. How does the child deal with elements such as heat/humidity, bugs, large crowds, loud music.

Any children causing disruption to the cast, crew or other patrons, may – along with their guardians – be asked to leave the theatre.

Please consider asking our box office staff about Relaxed Performances – these are an excellent alternative to the regular expectation of theatre etiquette and are ideal for all patrons who feel more comfortable with a relaxed environment. Relaxed Performances are not always possible. Please contact the box office to inquire about the current season.

Please click here for more details on “Relaxed Performances”

*please note that families bringing young children may have their seats moved to a location in the theatre where it is easier to exit if necessary*

I lost something at Rainbow Stage how do I get it back?

If you have lost an item at the stage you can email foh@rainbowstage.ca with a description of your lost item. The Front of House Manager will schedule a time to meet you at the stage in the park to retrieve the lost item. The box office windows open 2 hours prior to any performance and the Front of House Manager is there until close of performance each night.

If you can’t make it down to the stage again throughout the season all lost and found items are relocated to our administration offices, come the fall for a short period of time. At the end of the season (September), any items not claimed by their owners are either disposed off or donated to an appropriate organization.

If I’m sitting at the back of the theatre, will I be able to see?

The reality is there isn’t a “bad” seat in the house. Of course, the closer you sit, the more detail you’ll be able to see. The seating is arranged so that you will be able to see the whole stage no matter how far back you are sitting. When buying tickets online, an image showing the view from those seats will be displayed before the final checkout.

If it rains, am I going to get wet?

Although it is an open-air theatre, the entire seating area is covered by a roof. It’s best to check the weather before coming to the theatre and dress appropriately.

Is there an intermission? What is “intermission”? Are there washrooms on site?

An intermission is a short break near the middle of a production. Rainbow Stage productions have a 20-minute intermission. During intermission, patrons can use the washroom facilities, purchase concessions or merchandise, or enjoy Kildonan Park outside the theatre. Please keep your ticket with you at all times in the case you are asked to present it upon re-entry.

Washroom facilities are found near the front entry doors. We recommend arriving early and using the washroom before the show as at intermission time, the lines are quite long. For the August production, additional portable facilities will be available on the South end of the building through the side doors. The doors and facilities are monitored by staff and volunteers.

How long is the show?

Every production run time is different, but Rainbow Stage’s productions average at about 2.5 hours including a 20-minute intermission. A more precise show length will be available closer to opening night.

What time should I be at the theatre?
Patrons attending an evening performance are recommended to arrive at the theatre approximately 10 minutes prior to doors opening. Patrons attending a matinee performance should expect to encounter heavy traffic in and around Kildonan Park as the weekends are full of various activities taking place at Kildonan Park. Patrons should always keep in mind that Kildonan Park is City of Winnipeg property and with a variety of family fun activities than occur from day to day – give yourself ample time to enter the park and find parking. Although Rainbow Stage has a parking lot – patrons who hope to avoid congestion when arriving and leaving are encouraged to park on a side street and walk to the theatre. If you are picking your tickets up at the box office, you should allow yourself extra time as there are often long lines at the box office windows.

What if I’m late?
Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the Front of House staff. In the case of a reserved house, latecomers forgo their right to their reserved seat and will be seated at the back of the auditorium or in the most easily accessible seats to avoid disturbing the actors and other audience members. Latecomers may move to their assigned seats during intermission. Please allow for ample time to park and remember that there is often a line-up at the box office in the hour prior to show time.
Can I take pictures during the show?
Due to Union regulations, recording during the show of any kind – taking pictures, using video camera, camera phone, etc. is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. If you are witnessed taking pictures during the show, you will be asked to delete the photos in the presence of a volunteer or staff member. In cases of continued disregard of this rule, the camera/device may be confiscated for the duration of the performance and made available for pickup following the final curtain. Not only is it disruptive to the actors on stage, but it is also disruptive to the other patrons. Professional production photos can be found in all Rainbow Stage show programs
Can I book a taxi to pick me up after the show ends?

Yes. After the show, taxis may need to come through the Scotia Avenue entrance to the park and can pick you up by the south exit of the stage. There is a phone in the box office for emergency use only until intermission. We ask that if you must use this phone, you make calls short and not use it for personal matters unless absolutely necessary.

During the run of the show, the box office at the park will be open two hours prior to the performance. Patrons may come to the box office at the park in the evening to purchase tickets for any performance. However, tickets are not guaranteed to be available. We suggest that patrons buying for performances other than the current night come to the box office after the show has started to avoid the crowds gathering for the show.

What time should I be at the theatre?

If you are picking up your tickets at the box office, you should attempt to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the doors opening in order to avoid long line-ups. Patrons attending an evening performance are recommended to arrive at the theatre approximately 10 minutes prior to doors opening.
