As previously announced, Rainbow Stage will be bringing the musical version of the beloved film Shrek The Musical to Manitoba for the very first time. “We have been dreaming of presenting a slimy, stinky, gassy musical for years.” Says Artistic Director Ray Hogg, “Shrek The Musical gives us the opportunity to do just that. We love that this show is just as bold, funny and shockingly appealing as the DreamWorks animated film is. There are plenty of tongue in cheek jokes for mom and dad, with just the right amount of juvenile humour to keep the kids rolling in the aisles. As a parent, I know that this show will capture the imagination of my slimy toad-loving son, as well as the heart of my strong-willed, princess loving daughter. With inclusion, diversity and self-acceptance as major themes presented in Shrek The Musical, I am looking forward to the many empowering conversations this show is sure to spark between my children and I.”
Shrek The Musical will be directed & choreographed by Ray Hogg and conducted by Anthony Bastianon (making his Rainbow Stage debut). The cast is a combination of Rainbow Stage veteran performers and newcomers to Winnipeg.
Carson Nattrass will play the role of Shrek, the grumpy yet lovable anti-hero. Shrek The Musical marks Mr. Nattrass’ 10th season at Rainbow Stage. Some of the most memorable roles he has played include Carmen Ghia (Producers), Hipockets Duncan (The Buddy Holly Story), Gus/Growltiger (Cats), and Mr. Banks (Mary Poppins). Mr. Nattrass is also well known for his work as a writer and director, having helmed Rainbow Stage’s productions of Footloose (2012), A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline (2014), and this season’s Ring Of Fire.
Returning to her Winnipeg roots, comes Canadian sensation Heather McGuigan, who will be making her Rainbow Stage debut opposite Mr. Nattrass, starring as Princess Fiona – the down to earth, independent, strong-willed, princess with a secret. Born in Toronto and raised in Winnipeg, Ms. McGuigan graduated from St. John’s Ravenscourt School, before heading off to Theatre School at the tender age of 17. After 15 years in showbiz, Ms. McGuigan has performed at The Shaw Festival, The Stratford Festival, Drayton Entertainment, The Charlottetown Festival, CanStage, Mirvish, regional theatres across Canada, and four North American Tours which have taken her from Alaska to Mexico City.
Rounding out the trio of misfits starring in Shrek The Musical is Toronto-based crooner Jeigh Madjus who plays Shrek’s wisecracking sidekick, Donkey. In 2010, Mr. Madjus became something of an internet sensation when his Glee audition on YouTube was featured on celebrity blogger Perez Hilton’s website. Known for his quick, quirky wit and soaring tenor voice, Mr. Madjus was in the original New York City cast of the Imelda Marcos based musical Here Lies Love at the landmark Public Theatre and played the role of Jacob in the North American tour of La Cage aux Folles.
Messrs. Nattrass and Madjus, and Ms. McGuigan are joined by Becky Frohlinger (Gingy), Peter Huck (Lord Farquaad), Aaron Hutton (Pinocchio), and Nicky Lawrence (Dragon). Also in the cast are Evan Taylor Benyacar, Devon Michael Brown, Colleen Furlan, Trudy Lee Gayle, Brittany Hunter, Laura Kolisnyk, Simon Miron, Brett Owen, Joseph Sevillo, Jeff Soucy, Sarah Lynn Strange, Cory Wojcik, and 19 child actors ages 9 to 16 years old.
