2015 Season Lineup

West Side Story

By Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins. Directed & Choreographed by Tracey Flye (as per Jerome Robbins’ original choreography)

June 4th – June 19th 2015

WEST SIDE STORY is the legendary musical about star-cross’d young lovers Maria and Tony, set during the 50s and 60s in the Upper West Side of New York City. This classic musical adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" follows a pair of feuding families that become two warring New York City gangs – the white Jets, led by Riff, and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Despite their hatred and animosity, the situation between the Sharks and Jets seems simple and straightforward. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away, while the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway – whoever wins gains control of the streets. With a violent confrontation seemingly inevitable, Maria and Tony find themselves trapped in the crossfire, and the stakes and tension only rise as the story rushes inexorably towards its unforgettable conclusion.

Is West Side Story Good for Kids?

In the interest of avoiding plot spoilers, we will only say one thing for certain – audience members of all ages should come armed with tissues. Like its Shakespearian inspiration, all is not well that doesn’t end well, and theatregoers expecting a pitch-perfect happy ending should enter warily.

The show does deal with many adult themes: the evils of violence, murder, and rape are addressed, and there are instances of strong language and sexual innuendo. The story itself is based on racial conflict, providing a platform to deal with issues of race, prejudice, and bigotry. While younger children will likely not be ready for this level of social examination, West Side Story is a valuable experience for theater buffs and first-timers alike. For further reference, the 1961 Academy Award-winning film is an excellent benchmark – if your group can handle that, then they (and you) will be well prepared for what will play out on our stage.

Les Mis

Les Miserables: the Musical Phenomenon. By Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg, and Herbert Kretzmer

July 9th – July 24th 2015

A universal and uplifting journey of hope and salvation that spans generations, Les Misérables is the blockbuster hit musical combining an absolutely epic story with soaring, spine-tingling melodies and unforgettable lyrics. With a clear focus on storytelling and spectacular vocal performance, this incredible production will appear on our stage for the first time ever in July 2015. Audiences will be moved by the story of Jean Valjean, the reformed convict who is dogged by relentless officer of the law Javert, and swept up in the spirit of revolution alongside the underdogs of 19th century Paris. Hearts will break for Éponine as dashing young student Marius falls for Cosette, and as Javert closes in and the rebels’ resistance begins to collapse, the stage is set for confrontations, confessions, and a deep examination of the universal struggle of desire versus duty and the redemptive power of love. Chock-full of comedy, tragedy, history, and everything in between, Les Misérables has more than earned its accolades over the years.

Is Les MisÉrables Good for Kids?

Every child is different, but we advise that Les Misérables is likely not suitable for children under 10 due to mature themes, some mild language and violence, and some frightening scenes.

Sister Act

By Cheri & Bill Steinkiller, Glenn Slater & Alan Menken.
Directed by Ray Hogg

August 13th – September 1st 2015

Sister Act is Broadway’s feel-amazing musical comedy smash hit! The New York Post calls it “RIDICULOUSLY FUN”, and audiences are jumping to their feet in total agreement. Featuring unforgettable original music by eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop Of Horrors), Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and is hidden by the cops in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own in hilariously spectacular musical fashion.

Is SISTER ACT Good for Kids?

From its brightly coloured sets and costumes to its hummable tunes and a wholesome message of friendship and expression, Sister Act is an upbeat, family-friendly musical all the way. The big no-nos — sex, drugs, and language — play little part in the show (these are nuns, after all!), and instances of violence are largely implied rather than shown. We fully recommend Sister Act to audiences of all ages.
