Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra & Rainbow Stage announce Principal casting for South Pacific in Concert at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall

SOUTH PACIFIC IN CONCERT | COMPOSER RICHARD ROGERS | BOOK & LYRICS BY OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN & JOSHUA LOGAN | AIR CANADA POPS | OPENS APRIL 7 | CLOSES APRIL 9

As previously announced, The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Rainbow Stage will come together to present South Pacific in Concert as part of the Air Canada Pops Series at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall. “We are thrilled to have a project that brings together two iconic Winnipeg institutions.” Says Artistic Director Ray Hogg, “South Pacific tells a poignant timely tale that will resonate with theatre goers and music lovers alike. To be able to present this show and its beloved score at the scale afforded by the partnership of both organizations is really a dream come true.”

“We are thrilled to work with Rainbow Stage and the wonderful cast they have assembled for our concert presentation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Hearing a musical like this from the golden era of Broadway with a full orchestra will be such a special experience for our patrons,” said Jean-Francois Phaneuf, WSO VP Artistic Operations.

South Pacific in Concert will be directed by Rainbow Stage alumna Donna Fletcher and conducted by WSO Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano. Over 120 Winnipeg-based artists will come together in what is sure to be a truly enchanting evening of music and musical theatre featuring an exciting mix of Rainbow Stage’s most incredible musical theatre talents, the full Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the award-winning Prairie Voices choir.

Tough-as-nails Ensign Nellie Forbush will be brought to life by Jillian Willems. South Pacific marks Ms. Willems’ first star-turn at Rainbow Stage having first appeared in the children’s chorus for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, followed by a show-stopping feature as the star-to-be in the 2012 production of Annie.

Known equally for his rich, mellifluous voice, and his ability to “ooze romantic swagger” (Holly Harris, Winnipeg Free Press), local baritone Sam Plett is sure to enchant with his performance of Emile de Becque. Mr. Plett is a seasoned Rainbow Stage veteran with eight seasons under his belt including notable roles in Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, and Cats among others.

Rainbow Stage favorite Aaron Hutton lends his award-winning voice to the role of the tragically lovelorn Lieutenant Cable. At home in dramatic or comedic roles, Mr. Hutton was most recently featured in Rainbow Stage’s 2016 production of Shrek the Musical as Pinocchio. Previous Rainbow Stage credits include Les Misérables, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Footloose, and Rolf in The Sound of Music. He is a frequent soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. South Pacific marks his 9th season with Rainbow Stage.

Ms. Willems and Messrs. Plett and Hutton, are joined by Rochelle Kives (Bloody Mary), Stephanie Sy (Liat), Simon Miron (Billis), Ari Weinberg (Stewpot), Ryan Miller (Professor). Also in the cast are John Anderson, Josh Bellan, Nelson Bettencourt, Duncan Cox, Colleen Furlan, Katie German, Jesse Grandmont, Jacqueline Harding, Adam Hurtig, Cuinn Joseph, Sarah Luby, Julie Lumsden, Robyn Pooley, Jodie Potter, Wes Rambo, Liz Whitbread, and Hannah Wigglesworth.
