Rainbow Stage

I was fortunate last evening to attend Rainbow Stage's current production of the jukebox musical Breaking Up Is Hard To Do and thoroughly enjoyed it. The production is based on the music of American singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka whose hit list crosses over three decades whether on his own or other artists covering his songs. Like all jukebox musicals it's all about the great songs and the memories they bring back and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do is no exception featuring Sedaka-penned hits like the title song, "Laughter In The Rain", "Calendar Girl", "Solitaire", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", "Where The Boys Are" (recorded by Connie Francis) and "Love Will Keep Us Together" (recorded by The Captain & Tennille) plus many more.
The cast is all Manitoban (Yay!) and the acting and singing is superb, notably Laura Olafson as Lois (hilariously over the top), Katie German as Marj, Nelson Bettencourt as Gabe, and Darren Martens as Del Delmonico. Of particular note is the return of Debbie Maslowsky, the Grand Dame of Winnipeg musical theatre, in the role of Esther Simowitz. Debbie lights up the stage.
It's a step back into the days of the Catskill Mountains summer resorts (think Dirty Dancing) in what was known at the time as The Borscht Belt. The characters all interact in and around Esther's Paradise Resort and the fun is non-stop.
Of note as well, all the backing musicians are Manitobans including Harlequin guitarist Derrick Gottfried, Rob Siwik on drums and bassist Julian Bradford.
Well-worth checking out for an evening of nostalgia, great music and fun. The production runs until July 22.
